In December 2025 Steve and I recorded a four-hour conversation for his “Voice of the Mountains” podcast. It was split into two parts, which you can listen to here and here. This short clip is from a three-hour talk we had the following day wherein he describes being a 19 year-old, gap year exchange student in Yugoslavia where he joined a local mountaineering club. After earning his ‘alpinist diploma’ Steve was invited to join a state-sponsored expedition to attempt the Schell Route on Nanga Parbat in 1990. As an apprentice, he did a lot of work on the mountain to support the team, and learn. Marija Frantar and Joze Rozman summited in late-July.
I will release a couple of more clips before launching the entire conversation, which will be available to paid subscribers only until later in the year. Please consider becoming a paid subscribed to support this project.
