It all becomes much clearer when we surpass the age our fathers "sinned." For better or worse. It then magnifies and intensifies when you're terrified of paying it forward.
I feel this. Thank you. And I suppose my way of paying it forward is to pay across to my peers, many of whom have fine relationships with their fathers, but many more don’t, and would like to, or might like to. Feeling unique and alone in that position can cause some inertia, we can’t get unstuck. For me, knowing someone else — many someone elses — are in a similar place helped me immensely. Just a simple word, a nod, and it all shakes free. 🙏🏻
I suppose the silver lining to the absence of the father figure (whether it be from deliberate estrangement or not) is the opportunity to receive from a whole host of father-like figures. All arriving at just the right time. Insert any kind of reference to Fight Club, the reality is we have all forged each other in some way when we needed it the most. Which betters us even when we cannot get back to the root source of the issues.
Beautifully said Mark, these insights are important and I appreciate your thoughts even if they are hard to share with the world. I too have some forgiving and soul searching but need to go to Earth School first. Thanks
Thank you. About that Earth School … I don’t think we ever fully graduate; we keep learning, unlearning, maybe forgetting then relearning. I hate to offer any advice that I myself can’t abide so all I can say is, keep a sharp pencil and a blank page at hand. And look for me in the classroom.
As someone who has been reading and listening to your opinions, beliefs and insights for a long time. I do not take that advice lightly and do appreciate you offering it
Going through something similar and I’m going to be having the “forgiveness” conversation in a month or so myself. It was timely that this video noted dropped into my inbox bc I was struggling with what to do with what was on offer- “peace”, so to speak.
It was helpful to remember that we all have changed through time and growing is part of that. I’ll try acknowledging that and we’ll see what happens!
