Excellent. I need to develop this thesis a bit more but for today it was good enough. And if it triggers some thinking or consideration, so much the better!
I must admit that there were several moments when I was in Sarajevo (with a 35mm and a 50mm) that I really wanted a 24! That said, committing to one or two lenses makes seeing with them second nature.
I loved this. A long time ago I heard someone say that “our creativity is defined by our limitations” and it’s a mantra I hold close. Always. I believe it as much as I believe anything. When we have less we are required to bring more - to everything. Lately I’ve been traveling around with a backpack full of lenses again and it’s just not as fun as having only one camera and one lens. And I certainly can’t say the work is any better…
You were there when I started that 50mm experiment. I had no idea how a self-imposed technical challenge would expose broader philosophical concepts. This is it: “When we have less we are required to bring more - to everything.”
Situations have limits, and it's a good reminder that we have to adapt to make use of or improve our perspective.
I think we fall easily into the trap of changing the tool so we don't have to see and/or change ourselves.
Perfect timing: I’m packing my camera gear for a short trip, and your words will be useful reminders.

Short trips are the best to test it. I only took a compact 45mm Sigma to Sarajevo and I thought a lot more about missing the 24 than I actually did.

Beautiful. It reminds me of Eric Kandel's book: Reductionism in Art and Brain Science, which was recommended to me by the photographer Mark de Paola.
Thank you! I will be searching for this book in 3-2-1 ...
